The holiday season is surprisingly a common time of year for picking up injuries as people tend to change their normal routines and push their bodies in different ways.
Whether it’s a sprained ankle after wearing your favourite high heels to the office party or low back pain after driving long distances – here are my top tips to enjoying a healthy, pain-free holiday season!
- Don’t drink too much! The holiday season is often party season and we have a tendency to drink a little more champagne than normal! Unfortunately that brings with it a loss of balance and impaired co-ordination, which in turns bring falls and sprained ankles and wrists. You have been warned!
- Avoid sitting for long periods. This is a common contributor to low back pain, try and get up and walk around or stop for a car rest every 30 minutes.
- Get active. It’s common to put on a little excess holiday weight but keep it at bay by getting active. Use the time off work to go out for bike rides, long walks and play your favourite sports.
- Start slowly and build up. It’s common at New Years to make resolutions to get fit and lose weight. It’s very tempting to push yourself too early and try and run 10km when you may previously have only ever run 100m! Avoid the temptation as it will lead to injuries.
- Get injuries seen to. If you do injure yourself over the holiday season don’t ignore it and get it assessed and treated by a physiotherapist immediately.
